Jazz workshop, Fat Tuesday with J6, Classical meets folk

(Published in Jackson Hole Weekly, additional content added)Get Fat this Mardi Gras Tuesday with Jackson SixWhen you stroll into the Silver Dollar Bar on Fat Tuesday, it will look like a narrower demographic of a scene from HBO’s television drama, “Treme,” complete with Jackson’s own trombone-led Dixieland band that brings the spirit of New Orleans alive—1,900 miles from the source. Jackson Six brings to mind the incomparable Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five, adding a contemporary edge to the swinging, stomping and syncopated beats of New Orleans traditional jazz. Grab some beads, a Mardi Gras mask, and get to the dance floor. Expect to see a lot of special guests for this show, including an extra trumpet and a guest ivory player.  Jackson Six, 7:30 to 11 p.m., Fat Tuesday at the Silver Dollar Bar. Free. Jazz heads convene for workshop/concert at CenterJackson Hole Music Experience (JHME) will host bassist/composer Mike Pope, pianist/composer Geoffrey Keezer, and drummer/session player Marvin 'Smitty' Smith for a two-day workshop of theory, harmony, improvisational skills and ensemble playing tips. Serious jazz heads will benefit from working and playing with these luminaries who will end the weekend with a show in the Center Theater. JHME.org.Classical influences exposed Four members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic—Jin-Shan Dai (violin), Robert Gupta (violin), Ben Ullery (viola), Tao Ni (cello)—will be demonstrating the influence of folk music and other non-classical traditions on the classical repertoire in a Grand Teton Music Festival: Winter Chamber Series program dubbed “International Influences.” Selected pieces for the concert include Haydn’s “String Quartet, Op. 77, No. 1,” Bartok’s “String Quartet No. 2” and Ravel’s “String Quartet in F-Major.” GTMF: International Influences, 7 p.m., Friday at Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village.
