CD Review - Tedeschi Trucks Band
Revelator TEDESCHI TRUCKS BANDby Aaron Davis This album’s been a long time coming. And despite its unoriginal title, the mature blend of this husband-and-wife team equals a soul stew that, perhaps for Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, is the pinnacle of their respective careers. This set is overflowing with tasteful playing courtesy of Trucks—the most agile, masterful slide player that stands out from even the monster players thanks to his patient, often Eastern-influenced phrasing—and gutsy singing via Tedeschi. But get this: TTB is now an 11-piece band featuring brothers Oteil Burbridge (bassist with the Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (longtime keyboardist/flutist with The Derek Trucks Band), two drummers, a three-piece horn section and two harmony singers.Folks, there’s a lot of magic on this disc, and credit must be given to co-producer and multi-Grammy-winning engineer, Jim Scott. Impressively, Tedeschi and Trucks co-wrote the album’s 12 new songs with a list that includes more than 10 experienced songwriters, with care to exploit Tedeschi’s voice through use of spacious lyrical lines and soft harmonies. This piece appears in Jackson Hole Weekly - JHWeekly.com
