A musical feast for St. Patty’s weekend
(Published in Planet JH Weekly, additional content added)Roll up your sleeves and grab a stein of your favorite brew—it’s a green weekend in the Hole. Saturday begins the pre-holiday celebration with sought-after Irish acoustic quintet Lunasa at Center for the Arts (8 p.m., $15-$30). This is one of the more impressive Irish projects that have come through Teton County in recent years—and there’s been quite a few. Also on Saturday (though not Irish or Celtic in the slightest way), is Jackson’s beloved party band Mandatory Air playing Under the Tram (3 p.m., free).I'll be on stage with Screen Door Porch Friday and Saturday (7:30 to 11 p.m., Free) at the Silver Dollar. This is our last set of local shows 'til June 7, when the WYOmericana Caravan Tour featuring Jalan Crossland, SDP and JShogren Shanghai'd will take stage at the Pink Garter Theatre.Sunday is the real deal St. Patrick’s Day, splitting hairs between traditional Celtic/Irish music and party bands. Jackson’s own Slip ‘n the Jigs will instigate a festive party at the Silver Dollar (7:30 to 11 p.m., free). The revamped lineup features Kathy McCann (fiddle, vocals), Dave McCann (guitar, bass, vocals), Mimi Smith (fiddle), Bob Berky (concertina), Charlie Pike (tenor banjo, whistle, bodhran) Vince Gutwein (cello), Jamie Reilly (bodhran, vocals), and Mike Calabrese (drums).Sneaky Pete's Leprechaun Smashing Bonanza will lead the way for youthful, fist-pumping funksters at Town Square Tavern (9:30 p.m., free) featuring a locally trending groove band that is new to the scene, Sneaky Pete & the Secret Weapons. Another progressive project that popped up recently and is rocking a St. Patty’s set at The Bird (9:30 p.m., free) is Slaps ‘n Wax, a power duo consisting of DJ Cut La Whut and drummer John Wayne Harris, Jr. grinding out electronic mixes tossed up with live acoustic drumming.
