The Goods: He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, PTO, Pam Phillips
By Aaron Davis (for JHWeekly.com)Sibling folk circusOn a whim back in March, I and about 125 other music fans caught He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, a traveling Vaudeville-Americana-folk circus not unlike that of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. This flamboyant, L.A.-bred quintet brings quirk to folk like the freakiest of Cali representatives. While the collective has plenty of flare, it’s the hum-able melodies that will stick with you after the wow factor fades – of which there’s plenty to experience by perusing the band’s artful YouTube vids. Staging male-female sibling vocalists, percussion, upright bass, slide guitar, and even a musical tap dancer atop a kick drum, the band’s sound is reminiscent of Tom Waits and Velvet Underground. He’s My Brother She’s My Sister performs 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Pink Garter Theatre. Texas-based folk singer-songwriter, Shakey Graves opens the show. $10, available at PinkGarterTheatre.com, The Rose or at the door. 733-1500.Jazz you can depend onWhile many local music residencies take a break during this time of year, jazz at The Granary is a mainstay. If smokin’ jazz chops and a fiery red sunset is what you desire, pianist/vocalist Pam Phillips will be joined this Friday by bassist Bill Plummer and drummer Ed Domer, followed by a Saturday evening of solo standards and pop tunes. It’s a quaint, intimate setting, and reflects the local vibe this time of year. Pam Phillips Trio, 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, and Pam Phillips solo, 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, in The Granary at Spring Creek Ranch atop East Gros Ventre Butte. Free.Pickers get to pickin’Self-described as “straight-up bluegrass,” local quartet PTO is rumored to be an acronym for many things – Pick-up Truck Orchestra, Power Take Off, Poot’s Taking Over, Parent Teacher Organization – but Plum Tuckered Out seems to have been the seed. Featuring the wittiness of upright bassist/vocalist Poot McFarlin, among a cast of hot pickers in Matt Herron (fiddle), Brock Benjamin (banjo/vocals), and “Tall” Jon DeGroot (guitar/vocals), PTO will have a pickin’ party double header this week. PTO performs 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Café Genevieve, and 7 to 10 p.m., Thursday, at Q Roadhouse. Both shows are free.
