THE GOODS (9.14.11 - 9.20.11)

By Aaron Davis (for Jackson Hole Weekly, JHWeekly.com)Mr. Fred’s revamped odyssey I’ve followed Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey since 1997, attracted to its willingness to reach into Bitches Brew-level experimentation. Perhaps best labeled as playing an avant-garde concoction of jazz, rock and funk. The band has gone through many changes since forming as an octet in Tulsa in 1994.Now a quartet with one original member (pianist Brian Haas), and without 15-year member and sound-defining bassist Reid Mathis (who left the band in early 2009 to join Tea Leaf Green), the new sound is described as “equal parts earthy and nimble, pastoral and sweeping, elegant and rollicking.” The band is now tapping into its birthright, drawing upon “The Tulsa Sound” born of hometown heroes like Bob Wills, JJ Cale and Leon Russell, while keeping a jazz foundation that’s built firmly upon the likes of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Bring your mind and open it. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, 10 p.m., Tuesday, Knotty Pine in Victor. $10. 208-787-2866.It might be older than it looksAuthenticity can present a conundrum when striving for “new-old-time” music. I watched a couple of videos of Cahalen Morrison and Eli West playing simplistic, roots-inspired original music, and it immediately conjured up memories of seeing Tim O’Brien and Darrel Scott perform as a duo.Guitars, mandolins, banjos and vocal harmonies are the foundation for what the duo calls an “entirely new strain of roots music.” While that may be a stretch, there’s no doubting the genuine output, gemmed by tight, technical playing. Fans of Ben Winship’s ensembles—Brother Mule and Growling Old Men come to mind—or even Norman Blake, will eat this up for sure. The duo will make this stop in Driggs before heading to England, where they will do a 10-show tour.I’m betting this will be one of the highlights of free concerts that have been filling the confines of one of the best acoustic rooms in the region—Alpine Wines. Cahalen and Eli, 8 to 10 p.m., Wednesday, at Alpine Wines in Driggs. Free. EnjoyAlpineWines.com.
