Flinner returns with Grammy nod

(Published in Jackson Hole Weekly, additional content added)Matt Flinner—the world-class mandolin/banjo player and former Jackson resident who has collaborated with Loose Ties, Judd Grossman, played with Ben Winship in the Judith Edelman Band, and most recently, played on One Ton Pig’s 2012 self-titled release—was just nominated for a Grammy as a member of Modern Mandolin Quartet. The group’s album, Americana (a popular album title in 2012), earned nods for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance as well as Best Engineered Classical Album and Classical Producer of the Year.Flinner will once again be touring with his trio alongside guitarist Ross Martin and upright bassist Eric Thorin for what they dubbed in 2006 as “Music du Jour” touring—the ambitious element of writing new compositions each day to perform on stage that evening.“For the second set, we’ll play about 1/3 to 1/2 brand new music, and the rest of the evening we'll play music that is between 24 hours and 200 years old,” explained Flinner.The Flinner Trio’s musical toolbox is referred to as “deeply-rooted new acoustic music.” Bluegrass, jazz and Celtic music are all present here; not necessarily overtly, or in a contrived sense but guaranteed to be a diversion from what roots music aficionados are accustomed to.
