By Aaron Davis (for JHWeekly.com)Arrow Heartless Bastards ***1/2From deep and masculine to angelic and delicate, singer/guitarist/songwriter Erika Wennerstrom has a remarkably dynamic vocal range. Comparable to, but not as pure as, Brandy Carlile’s voice, her Midwestern rasp possesses the power to hang with a big, double electric guitar crunch. The line, “I just don’t look at things the same way since we parted ways” in the rollicking “Parted Ways” could be relationship based, or perhaps it reflects Wennerstrom’s realignment from a trio to an all-new quartet a few years back. Produced by Jim Eno of Spoon, I really dig how the rhythm section is highlighted in the mix, textured by airy guitars that tend to be panned into respective spaces. Radio single and the album’s strongest all-around tune, “Only for You,” touches on this point, while “Skin and Bone” brings out the bongos and acoustic guitar for an early 90s, folk-rock sound. The arrangements on Arrow hold together like glue—heavy with open, acoustic and electric elements, and a track-to-track consistency for a thematic aftertaste.
